Create new music. Explore new ideas. Shape the sound of today.
The Research Retreats are a collaborative creation programme for cellists and composers, focusing on the development of new work in dialogue with contemporary visual art.
Working in creative teams, you collaborate from the earliest stages of an idea through to a public performance. Together you explore new musical language, experiment with sound, and contribute to the development of contemporary repertoire shaped by artistic exchange and reflection.
The programme is both a laboratory and a performance space for new music, where ideas evolve into fully realised works presented to an audience. Selected works may be considered for inclusion in the Internationaal Cellofestival Zutphen 2027 programme.
Creating new music together
New music rarely emerges in isolation. The Research Retreats create space for composers and performers to shape ideas together, from the first artistic impulse to a public performance.
Working in dialogue with contemporary visual art, participants explore themes, stories and questions that resonate with the world around us. The programme invites experimentation, exchange and artistic risk-taking, while building meaningful collaborations between composers, performers and artists.
Rather than interpreting existing repertoire, you become part of the process through which new repertoire comes into being.

Shared ideas, new sounds
Contemporary music grows through collaboration. By bringing together composers, performers and visual artists, the Research Retreats create a space where new artistic voices can emerge, be tested and shared with an audience.
You are invited to move beyond established roles and become an active contributor to the creation of new work. Through dialogue, experimentation and performance, ideas are transformed into living artistic experiences.
Working in a small international group, you become part of a shared creative process in which composers and performers shape new work together. Along the way, you explore not only new sounds and artistic possibilities, but also the questions, stories and perspectives that define the world around us.

The Research Retreats unfold in two phases.
Online preparation phase
Several weeks before the live programme, participants meet online. Together with the visual artist, composers and coaches, you explore the theme and artistic context of the project.
Composers develop one or more short works inspired by the exhibition, written for the instrumentation of the selected Research Retreat. Depending on the edition, this may include combinations of 1–4 cellists with percussion or piano.
During this phase, cellists and composers are carefully matched so that each collaboration can develop in a focused way. Composers begin developing their musical ideas and exchange sketches, concepts and feedback with the artistic faculty and their assigned performers.
In this ongoing collaborative process, cellists already start engaging with and preparing the material in close dialogue with the composer, so that the works can evolve before the group meets in Zutphen.
Live programme in Zutphen
When you arrive in Zutphen the focus shifts towards interpretation, rehearsal and performance, and towards refining musical detail, communication and stage presence.
Cellists and composers work closely together on artistic decisions, structure and performance practice. In addition to the collaborative project, cellists receive individual coaching and masterclasses on contemporary repertoire of their own choice (composed after 1950).
The week concludes with a public performance in Dat Bolwerck, presenting the newly developed works in dialogue with the exhibition. In some cases works may be considered for inclusion in the Internationaal Cellofestival Zutphen 2027 programme (23–27 August 2027).
Each individual composition is professionally recorded on video and shared with the participants after the programme.
The programme in Zutphen starts on Wednesday 13:00 with a introduction lunch and ends on Saturday after the performance at around 22:00. If you plan to travel home on Sunday, you are welcome to stay an extra night at no additional cost.
