Evolve towards a performance at Internationaal Cellofestival Zutphen 2027
This Open Call is intended for cellists and other musicians with an existing artistic idea they wish to further develop towards a performance of approximately 30 minutes.
Projects may be solo or duo, and may include collaborations with other instruments, voice or artistic disciplines. At least one of the performers must be a cellist. We are particularly interested in projects engaging with contemporary themes and perspectives.
This Open Call is part of the Monastery programme. The Monasteries form an ensemble lab and artistic development space where ideas evolve towards a festival performance. You are required to participate in at least two Monasteries.
Edda & Nordic Sagas – living mythologies
We are seeking strong artistic proposals that engage with Edda & Nordic Sagas not as historical reconstruction, but as a contemporary artistic source of inspiration. The theme invites exploration of mythology, storytelling, landscape and collective memory as living material for performance.
Projects may draw inspiration from Nordic literature and oral traditions, folk music, ritual, transformation, exile, belonging, and ecological or social perspectives related to the theme.
We also welcome proposals exploring new forms of concert presentation, performance practice or spatial experience.
Performing within the Festival
Internationaal Cellofestival Zutphen brings together renowned artists and emerging talent in a five-day festival of around 30 concerts across the historic city of Zutphen. From intimate performances to adventurous new formats, the festival welcomes thousands of visitors from across the Netherlands every edition.
Selected Open Call projects become part of the official festival programme. Together, we explore which stage, venue or setting best supports your artistic idea – perhaps even in a location not yet part of the festival.
Your performance will be included in the festival marketing and presented to an engaged and curious audience with a strong interest in new artistic voices.
What we are looking for?
We are particularly interested in projects in which you:
- combine strong musical quality with a clear artistic concept
- explore innovative forms of presentation and audience engagement
- consider space, atmosphere and scenography as part of your performance
- create meaningful connections between music, storytelling and contemporary society
