Monasteries – Artistic Development Programme for Cellists & Collaborative Practice
Discover your creative potential, grow as a musician and refine your technique in an intensive international learning environment. Taking place four times per year, the Monasteries offer an ongoing artistic development space that can be entered at different moments.
Through individual coaching and ensemble playing, the Monasteries support conservatory students and emerging professionals in developing confidence and artistic clarity.
We also welcome duo applications, including collaborations between cello and other instruments. In these cases, you join the Monasteries together and also work with the other participants in ensemble settings, focusing on collaboration, interaction and collective music-making through shared artistic coaching.
A space to refine your playing, broaden your perspective and grow as an artist
These masterclasses invite you into an intensive artistic process in which technique, interpretation, physical awareness and reflection continuously inform one another.
Through individual coaching, ensemble playing and collaborative exploration, you will strengthen both your musical voice and your sense of freedom in performance. Alongside technical work and repertoire study, there is space for attention, listening, curiosity and exchange.
We work not only on how music is played, but also on how it is experienced, embodied and communicated.
You are welcome to bring repertoire of your own choice, with piano and – at selected Monasteries – harpsichord.

A shared artistic experience
Monasteries take place in a focused and supportive environment where musical work and community life naturally intertwine. You attend each other’s masterclasses, rehearse and perform together, share meals, and continue conversations beyond the sessions themselves.
We work in a small group of up to twelve participants – including the 4 members of Ensemble CelloWercken – allowing space for individual attention, artistic dialogue and personal development throughout the days. Teachers challenge and support each participant with care, openness and precision.
An important part of the programme is the opportunity to experiment – musically, technically and artistically – within an atmosphere of trust and curiosity.
The course concludes with an informal public performance in which ensemble and individual work can be shared with an audience.

Open Call
Festival Performance Projects for Cellofestival Zutphen 2027 – solo & duo
Evolve towards a performance at International Cellofestival Zutphen 2027 within the context of the Monasteries programme.
This Open Call is intended for musicians with an existing artistic idea they wish to further develop towards performance. Across a minimum of two Monasteries, you receive artistic coaching, feedback and online guidance while working towards a programme of approximately 30 minutes.
Projects may be solo or duo, and may include collaborations with other instruments, voice or artistic disciplines. At least one of the performers must be a cellist.
We are particularly interested in projects engaging with contemporary themes and perspectives connected to the upcoming festival theme: Edda / Nordic Sagas – mythology, storytelling, landscapes and oral traditions as living sources for contemporary artistic practice.
This Open Call is part of the Monastery programme. The Monasteries form an ensemble lab and artistic development space where ideas evolve towards a festival performance. You are required to participate in at least two Monasteries.
Artistic Faculty
Each programme is guided by a changing team of internationally active musicians and teachers.
