Research Retreats: where music meets fine art
Research Retreats revolve around an exhibition at Dat Bolwerck, the renowned arts center in Zutphen. This unique setting creates a space where music and fine art come together in an inspiring dialogue.
As a cellist or composer, you arrive in Zutphen after a period of careful preparation. In this Research Retreat of 4 immersive days, you collaborate intensively with fellow composers, musicians and a dedicated team of mentors—experienced composers and cellists—who guide you in refining your work.
The retreat culminates in the Research Performance, where the artists introduce their work, setting the stage. After that, the musicians take the floor, bringing their vision on the theme to life through sound.
It all comes together in the Research Performance

I AM ALL HERE
Bas Kosters (1977 – NL) works across various media: textiles, graphic art, ceramics, soft sculptures, and paintings. His visual language is cartoon-like, humorous, and sometimes erotic, yet also attentive, gentle, and introspective.
His work spans wall hangings, puppets, costumes, ceramics, glass objects, drawings, and installations. Known for his colorful, eccentric characters, he blends social themes with humor and edge. National media describe him as driven by compassion, with a deep focus on community, emotional openness, and celebrating both societal and personal topics.
I AM ALLE HERE is an intimate, engaged, and visually rich exhibition where Bas Kosters shares his exploration of self-expression, connection, and mindful creation. Through active participation and a diverse, reflective body of work, he invites the public to experience the power of loving attention and shared creativity.

LIFE-LINE – BACK TO THE SOURCE
Karin Bos (1966, NL) graduated at the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts in 1989. She works as a visual artist in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her main media are painting, drawing and printing.
People are the focus point of her work. Main characters are usually girls or women. Especially mutual relative power and relations have her interest. Frictions and inequality in these relationships is a recurrent theme. For instance between man and woman, or adult and child, or children amongst each other, group behaviour versus the loner. When the pursuit of harmony fails, it becomes interesting for her work.
‘LIFE-LINE – BACK TO THE SOURCE is a show about loss. For this project the artist went back to the source and followed the water of her childhood at the IJsselmeer lake. The result is a poetical show in which loss, grief, hope, resilience and water meet in an installation combined with new paintings and works on paper.

The Research Process
CELLISTS AND COMPOSERS COLLABORATE
DURING THE RETREAT
The first encounter with the new music often brings surprising insights. Experimental works can be particularly stimulating, while other compositions may feel instantly familiar, as though they are already part of your repertoire.
As rehearsals progress, a stronger connection with the composers’ vision often develops, leading to an enriching exchange of ideas. At times, technical precision is required to translate ideas into sound, while at other moments, the input of the musicians elevates the compositions to a higher level.
The teachers are ready to coach and guide you. An open attitude is encouraged, along with learning from each other and taking new steps in the musical process. All of this contributes to your growth as an artist and helps you discover your unique musical voice.
